Barberyn Island Lighthouse

Beruwala Lighthouse, also known as the Barberyn Lighthouse, is a historic 34-meter-tall white granite tower located on Barberyn Island, just 0.8 km offshore from Beruwala. First lit in November 1889, it is one of Sri Lanka’s four

international lighthouses and continues to serve as an active navigational aid, offering stunning views and rich maritime history.

Climbing the tower is possible, but it may require an additional tip or fee (approximately LKR 1,000–2,000), payable directly to the lighthouse keepers. Access is not guaranteed and can occasionally be restricted depending on the keeper’s discretion or current regulations.

Rising above Barberyn Island, the Beruwala Lighthouse rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and Sri Lanka’s southwestern coastline. Surrounding the tower, the island itself is a peaceful retreat, rich with lush tropical greenery, swaying coconut palms, and rugged rocky shores—perfect for relaxed nature walks and scenic picnics. Just offshore, the waters around the lighthouse reveal a vibrant snorkeling site where coral patches shelter sea turtles, schools of parrotfish and snappers, along with an abundance of colorful reef fish, making it an ideal blend of coastal exploration and marine adventure
